Epilogue

Trieze sat in his office, a single sheet of paper held unfolded in his hands. He read the contents for a third time, a smile brightening his features.

Dear Treize,

When I left your office that night, I wished with all my heart that I could ask your forgiveness. I am writing this letter with that in mind.

I cannot tell you how much my time with you meant to me. For all that it was intended as a sham, you are one of my first, true friends, and I am forever grateful to you. I hope that I did not hurt you as much as it seemed, for that was never my intention. I know that this letter is a poor way of begging forgiveness for the reprehensible act I have committed - and will never commit again, regardless of orders - but I can only hope that when this war is over, I will be able to stand before you in person and repeat what I have written here.

Most humbly,

Trowa

P.S. It appears that Quatre does, in fact, appreciate me as much as you'd hoped, much to my surprise and gratification. I am eternally grateful to you for that, as well.

Treize stood on a bridge, a sealed envelope in his hands. The letter within, bearing only four words, and his signature, could never reach its intended, for he had no way of knowing how to find him. He could only hope that, in some small way, this message could reach him.

He cast the letter into the flowing waters and turned away, a smile on his face.

As the river carried the message along, the water slowly seeped into the expensive paper, reaching the ink and dissolving it. Ultimately, even the paper itself succumbed to the water, and tore into shreds, then dissolving into tiny fibres. Somewhere, a boy held gently in the arms of another, smiled in his sleep.

Trowa, I forgive you.
